Help us support Public Health programming in the Dominican Republic

A group of students from Northeastern University will be traveling to La Guama, Dominican Republic with Bridges to Community to work on community development projects with a focus on public health.

Bridges to Community's mission is to build a more just and sustainable world through service-learning and community development by engaging volunteers to work in developing countries—building community and changing lives. They do so by working closely with community leaders in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic in the areas of housing, education, health, and economic development. Most of Bridges' programs and projects are driven by volunteer participation that incorporates service-learning into the volunteers' on-the-ground experience.

When community members are healthy, more students attend school regularly and adults are able to work when they need to. Bridges' public health volunteers work on a number of projects to improve the health of community members, including building sanitary latrines to reduce the contamination of the local water supply, taking surveys to help the Ministry of Health improve their medical records, and hosting workshops for youth and adults on various aspects of personal hygiene. Some groups who are accompanied by volunteer doctors also host pop-up clinics to screen community members for undiagnosed chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension; when found, we work with local Dominican doctors to establish a treatment plan and encourage more regular check-ups.

Our goal is to raise $4,500 to support Bridges' community development work which includes this health program, as well as housing, education, and economic development programs.

If you would like a separate fundraising page to help raise money for your trip fee, please contact Paula Mulhair at paula@bridgestocommunity.org.
