$450 towards $4,000

This May, I will be traveling to the Dominican Republic with Bridges to Community to help struggling communities improve their public health systems.

Our primary mission this trip will be to screen as many community members of La Guama and other surrounding communities for high blood pressure and diabetes. Theses are two frequently undiagnosed and untreated conditions that can cause devastating problems for community members. Untreated high blood pressure and diabetes leads to heart disease and strokes which are debilitating for both the affected person as well as their family. A stroke or heart attack may take a way a father from feeding his family or prevent a mother from caring for her family. We screen community members in conjunction with the local government clinic and any cases we find in the community, get referred to their assigned clinic for further care and treatment as needed. We screen communities, the old fashion way by going door to door, meeting and talking about these health care issues that are so prevalent in these communities. We educate along the way and we build bridges between ourselves and the local community.

We will also being running education classes for the community on basic health care issues such as first aid and other subjects.

As a student myself, I understand the importance of creating a lasting change in the world rather than a simple fix. Bridges to Community's goals align with that in every facet of their cause, helping others help themselves, and giving them the tools they need to lift themselves up.

Bridges to Community's mission is to build a more just and sustainable world through service-learning and community development by engaging volunteers to work in developing countries—building community and changing lives. They do so by working closely with community leaders in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic in the areas of housing, education, health, and economic development. Most of Bridges' programs and projects are driven by volunteer participation that incorporates service-learning into the volunteers' on-the-ground experience. This trip will allow these college students such an experience that they will hopefully carry through their health care careers.
Our goal is to help the local medical system because when community members are healthy, more students attend school regularly and adults are able to work when they need to. Bridges' public health volunteers have worked on a number of projects to improve the health of community members, including building sanitary latrines to reduce the contamination of the local water supply, taking surveys to help the Ministry of Health improve their medical records, and hosting workshops for youth and adults on various aspects of personal hygiene.
Our goal is to raise $4,000 to support Bridges' community development work which includes this health program, as well as housing, education, and economic development programs. Join me in supporting real change. Let’s support good in the world and make a difference.
