  • Hi I'm Rosie Swidler and over the summer I will be going to volunteer in La Guama in the Dominican Republic.

Over the summer I will be traveling to a 1,500 person rural village called La Guama, located in the mountains of the Dominican Republic, to build homes for a family whose home has been deemed below sub-standard. I am able to go to the Dominican Republic with the help of Bridges to Community, a charitable organization whose mission is to build a more just and sustainable world through service learning and community development by engaging volunteers to work in developing countries—building community and changing lives.

Over the course of seven days I will work six hours each day amongst locals who volunteered to construct the walls and floors of the houses. In addition, I will be immersing myself into the culture by mainly speaking in Spanish, eating the local food (rice/beans/plantains), taking showers in the river, playing and coloring with the children and painting all of the villagers' nails with polish.

This trip was extremely appealing to me and enjoyable which is why i am going on it again as it not only made me realize that I could truly make a difference in someone's life but it allowed me to immerse myself in a country with a different language and culture and helped expand my horizons to understand what people's lives are like who live in severe poverty.

My previous trip and my future one will continue to change my perspective on the world and impact my future goals because it showed me how lucky I am to live in an amazing town l and how I should be more focused on improving the lives of people who are less fortunate than I am – both locally and across the globe.

I enjoyed this trip so much that over the Summer I will be going back to La Guama to continue to build houses for those who cannot afford one otherwise and I encourage everyone to help by donating!

One home does make a difference.

My goal is to raise $10000 to support Bridges' community development work which includes this housing program, as well as health, education, and economic development programs.
